The Texas Essential knowledge and Skills for Spanish 1 include five major areas, the 5 C's of the national standards:
1.-Communication The student communicates in a language other than English using the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
2.-Cultures The student gains knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
3.-Connections The student uses the language to make connections with other subject areas and to acquire information.
4.-Comparisons The student develops insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing the student's own language and culture to another.
5.-Communities The student participates in communities at home and around the world by using languages other than English.
The ultimate goal of learning to communicate in a new language is for the student to be able to function in a diverse community and a diverse and challenging world market. As we move forward into globalization, Spanish speakers become more valuable to businesses and public institutions. Spanish classes provide students the opportunity to use the language in all contexts: formal, professional, and academic.
The Spanish 1 class covers Vocabulary, Grammar, Culture, Reading, Writing, and Literature.
Students learn about Spain, Puerto Rico, Texas, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Florida, Republica Dominicana, and Peru.
They are provided with ample opportunities to develop oral fluency by participating in dialogues, role-playing, readers theater, plays, and dramatizations.
